Star Trek Triton

Just having some fun with an idea for a good old Star Trek cartoon. I designed a pretty little ship too, but I haven't gotten around to finishing it up.

The idea for the art direction here is to be functional both in a technical aspect, but also in respect to the tone of the story. Most of the stylization comes from simplifying the shapes and structure, making it easier to animate. Keeping the proportions realistic, and trying to eliminate as much caricature as possible keeps the characters from becoming sort of "goofy" looking for lack of a better word. That way they can compliment a serious science fiction story, something you don't see very often today unless it's anime.

I have a pretty sweet job, and I suppose not many people get to say that (and mean it). I get to work with not just one or two, but a whole LOT of other artists who are so talented they make my head spin. I would love to show some of our crazy cool stuff on my poor neglected blog, but Disney keeps everything pretty much under lock and key.

Here's an old design that got tossed out from last year though! Hahaha! I guess it's semi-appropriate what with winter starting and all... More new stuff soon I promise!

Turtles are probably my favorite kind of pet. They're such characters! Mine died earlier this year, but he was 22 years old and had a pretty sweet life.

We had some good times growing up together little buddy, here's to you!

Star Trek Concept

I would love to pitch a Star Trek cartoon someday. Here's kind of a crappy location design for a starship bridge. I messed up some of the perspective, and it's a little rough in places, but whatever.

Obviously in the style of the new movie from last year, which I thought had hands down the best 15 minutes of any Star Trek ever created in it's opening sequence. It's also kind of inspired by that cool overhead shot of the bridge in the 70's animated series by Filmation.

I swear to god I've designed these characters for a project of mine 10 times already and haven't quite gotten it. There's obviously some problems with these drawings, but they were just so fun to do!

Designing an action cartoon is really hard. Especially for me, since I'm not very good at it. It's an entirely different type of aesthetic and appeal than that in funny cartoons, to which I am naturally inclined. Had I grown up with more american action cartoons and japanese animation in the 1980's maybe it would be a little easier.

Coming up with cool space ship designs is even harder. I've been shooting to emulate a star wars/battlestar galactica look, mixed in with some modern jet fighter influence.

It's going to take a while to finish up this show demo and get the pitch package together. I could definitely use some help.

I love science fiction and outer space in general. When I was a kid I used to design these hilariously outlandish starships on graph paper (for no other reason than it looked more 'futuristic' than loose leaf), and dreamt of traveling to other planets in them.

I'm working on a bunch of new stuff, but in the meantime I figured I otter post something.... *rimshot* Good lord, the comedy just seems to flow from me. Because he's an otter. And that's what I said. Hillarious.

This was originally done for a job, and then re-worked for my demo purposes. A shiny nickel to anybody who can tell me what the reflection on the floor says!

So I had this great idea for a short a week or two ago, sort of a take on the classic story of the three little pigs. I was all excited and reinvigorated, designing characters and scribbling out layouts. I then did what I usually do; take a look on the old internet for some inspiration... and unfortunately stumbled across somebody elses short that was pretty much exactly my 'great' idea. Argh, back to the drawing board it seems.

Anyway, here's a couple of Freleng/Benedict inspired Big Bad Wolf drawings. I wanted to do more but I honestly couldn't even bring myself to clean these up properly, haha!

So I didn't do an update by Christmas like I had hoped, but I did have the flu, so...

I've been putting off finishing this model sheet for about 4 years now, and I've finally got around to actually doing it! I have no idea what got into me. One minute I was watching ABC's epic masterpiece "The Bachelor" and the next I found myself whipped into a frenzy of drawing and determination. Quite strange.

I don't do a whole lot of 3D work anymore, but doing these were fun. I actually had done a fourth design, but she didn't work out so hot. I was going for a 'fun silly friend' type thing but what came out was a 'crazy ex-girlfriend' vibe... yikes. Ah well, that's what happens when you're rushed.

I initially did these character concepts for a show pitch at the animation studio I work at, but it never really came together. It's just as well though, because I kind of like them and don't really want to give them away. I'm totally going to repurpose these ideas into something cool someday.
